Nazareth College President's Civic Engagement Awards 2020
Nazareth College awarded the 2020 President's Civic Engagement Awards to celebrate students, faculty, staff, and community partners who "make a difference in their own world and the world around them." This collection of awards recognize the personal commitments Nazareth students, faculty, and staff make towards leading a civically engaged life, working for social justice, and inspiring others to become caring, active, and informed members of our society. We also recognize the integral role our community partners play in co-educating our students and supporting their community engagement.

Quinton Harvey Receives Prestigious Fulbright Award
Quinton Harvey of Utica, N.Y., receives prestigious Fulbright Award from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Harvey earned his bachelor of music in music theory and bachelor of music in vocal performance, along with a minor in German, and he will teach English in Germany. He will be foreign languages assistant in a German classroom. Outside the classroom, he proposed using his musical skills to establish a community choir that would explore both German and American traditional folk music. He is working on a proposal for a Fulbright to Austria for the year following his current Fulbright. Otherwise, Harvey will stay in Germany and begin a master's program in musicology.

Ebony Edwards Receives Prestigious Fulbright Award
Ebony Edwards of Rochester, N.Y., received a prestigious Fulbright Award from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Edwards earned her undergraduate degrees at Nazareth in Italian and inclusive childhood/middle childhood Education, and then earned her master's in early childhood education, and she will teach English in Malaysia. As an inclusive educator, Edwards highly values her students' individuality and diverse backgrounds and wanted to totally immerse herself in a culture much different from her own. Upon her return, she plans to continue her search for a full time position as an elementary school teacher.

Kara DuChene Receives Prestigious Fulbright Award
Kara DuChene of Sherill, N.Y., receives a prestigious Fulbright Award from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. DuChene earned her bachelor of arts in Italian with a minor in international studies from Nazareth in December 2011 and graduated with her master's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in December 2014. She has been selected to teach English in Italy.

Stephanie Adams Receives Prestigious Fulbright Award
Stephanie Adams of Ilion, N.Y., receives prestigious Fulbright Award from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Adams earned her bachelor of art in Asian Studies, along with minors in Chinese and Spanish. She has been selected to teach English to elementary or junior high aged children in Taiwan. Upon her return, Adams will attend Georgetown University to pursue a master's degree in Asian Studies.

Two Nazareth College visual communication design students create season artwork for Blackfriars Theatre in Rochester, New York
Two Nazareth College visual communication design students created the 2015-2016 season and event artwork for Blackfriars Theatre. "I'm extremely proud of Meagan and Amanda's efforts," said Sherri Baker Hamilton, assistant professor in the College's Art Department and director of the visual communication design program. "We couldn't have achieved such a successful outcome of a real-world project, or had the rich community engagement experience, without the tremendous support we received from Blackfriars." Blackfriars Theatre is a mid-sized professional theatre that has entertained audiences for 63 years in Rochester, New York.

Three Nazareth College visual communication design students win ADDY Awards
Three Nazareth College Visual Communication Design students won awards at the Rochester Advertising Federation's annual Addy Awards competition. Student Ashley Neal was awarded a gold Addy and cash scholarship for her Owl Company Rum Packaging Design; Desiree Moore was awarded a silver Addy for her Stephen King Movie Poster Series; and Mary Bonomo was awarded a silver Addy for her Hutch Milk Packaging and Branding in the Student Category. The RAF Addy Awards are part of the national American Advertising Federation professional competition, and are judged anonymously outside of the Rochester market. These students' submissions were judged in New York City.

Melissa Stio Earns Italian Women's Civic Club Scholarship
Melissa Stio is a recipient of the 2014 Dante Scholarship Award from the Italian Women's Civic Club (IWCC). Stio will receive an award of $2,700 for her next semester's costs. Recipients are selected from all the eligible candidates by members of the Dante Scholarship Committee. Awards are based on criteria set by the committee and include academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community service, and personal identification with Italian American heritage.

Nazareth College Students Participate in Summer Research
Seven Nazareth College students spent their summer doing research with Dr. Rich Hartmann. They worked on three projects aimed at improving the efficiency of biodiesel synthesis. Members of the team included Alexander Ballatori, Kevin Denny, Matthew Leverich, Jacob Murray, Kathryn Proe, Jaissy Sekhon, and YashoNandini Singh.

Katelynn Kundrata Receives Prestigious Fulbright Award
Katelynn Kundrata receives prestigious Fulbright Award from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Kundrata is a senior teaching English to speakers of other languages and will be teaching English in primary and secondary schools in Malaysia. She will engage her students and the community in an art project focused on cultural understanding. Upon her return, Katelynn plans to continue teaching English.

Teri Bunce Receives Prestigious Fulbright Award
Teri Bunce receives prestigious Fulbright Award from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Bunce is a senior international studies and history double major with a minor in French. She will teach English in South Korea and is planning to establish an a cappella English ensemble for teenaged boys and girls. Upon her return, Bunce plans to attend graduate school in the Washington, D.C. area and pursue a career in international relations.

Cherise Madigan Earns Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow Award
Cherise Madigan is the recipient of the national Newman Civic Fellow Award. The Newman award, presented by Campus Compact, is given to college student leaders who represent the next generation of civic leaders through service, research, and advocacy. She is the first Nazareth student to earn this national honor and is one of 197 student leaders from colleges nationwide recognized.

Rowan Collins Recognized for Work with Empire State Pride Agenda
Rowan Collins, of Albany, N.Y., is a senior at Nazareth College. He was recognized by the Empire State Pride Agenda for his work as an activist for transgender rights and social justice.

Nazareth College Students Present at Communications Research Conference
A team of six students from Nazareth College recently presented at the 7th Annual Conference for Undergraduate Research in Communication on April 14 at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Their papers were competitively selected from undergraduates submitting from a number of institutions nationally. Kaitlyn Oudt's paper, "Common Place in Disney Channel's Hannah Montana" won an award for Top Paper in Criticism.

Nazareth College Announces Students in Science and Mathematics Scholars Program
The Nazareth College Science and Mathematics Scholars (SaMs) program encourages academically talented students with demonstrated financial need to pursue studies in the areas of mathematics and science. Students receive a $10,000 scholarship that can be renewed for up to four years. In addition to the scholarship, opportunities for students in the SaMs program include participation in a first year academic learning community, field trips and seminars related to career exploration, and opportunities to engage in undergraduate research and/or industrial internships.

Three Nazareth Graduates Receive Assistantships to Teach In France
Nazareth College is pleased to announce that three of its graduating seniors were selected to receive French Government English Teaching Assistantships for the upcoming academic year. Tarin Baxter, Chelsea Church, and Victoria Ryan will be in various parts of France teaching English to high school and middle school students. These competitive assistantships give students a chance to gain experience in their field and improve their language skills as well as foster cross-cultural understanding.
