Rochester Hosts Music Therapy Conference

Rochester, NY (02/27/2017) — Nazareth College’s Music Therapy professors and students are playing an integral role in the 64th annual conference of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Chapter of the American Music Therapy Association (MAR-AMTA) being held at the Hyatt Regency of Rochester, N.Y., from March 15-18.  This annual gathering is expected to bring over 700 music therapy students and professionals from across the Northeast to downtown Rochester.  National and international leaders of music therapy will be presenting information related to music therapy research, education, theory, and clinical practice.

Six Nazareth music therapy professors, along with students and alumni of the music therapy program are speaking or working at the conference.

Nazareth College offers undergraduate and graduate programs in music therapy and has graduated over 300 students who work as music therapists across the globe. Rochester is home to a vibrant community of over 100 music therapists. There are therapists working in hospitals, schools, mental health facilities, assisted-living residences, and private practice clinics.

The conference will feature the NPR Tiny Desktop Winner, Gaelynn Lea, and Advocacy Breakfast that recognizes music therapy advocates within the local Rochester community and beyond, including administrators of agencies that employ music therapists and legislators that support the state recognition of music therapy. Additionally, an information session will be held for high school students interested in pursuing a degree in music therapy.
