Three Rochester Universities team up for the 2024 Rochester King for A Day - MLK Day of Service, Jan. 27

Nazareth University, University of Rochester, and Roberts Wesleyan University kick off the day of service at East High

Rochester, NY (01/25/2024) — Rochester colleges and universities are coming together with local organizations to honor the life and work of the Reverend, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and contributors to the civil rights movement through a day of action and advocacy. The 2024 Rochester King for A Day, MLK Day of Action event is a way to celebrate community, build relationships, and support a worthy cause through acts of service.

College students from Nazareth University, University of Rochester, and Roberts Wesleyan University, alongside fellows from Flower City AmeriCorps and Rochester AmeriCorps, convene at East High on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 9-10 a.m. for an opening kick-off led by Dr. Johnny Harris and Tanika Edwards-Harris, Nazareth University Bonner Leader students, University of Rochester Douglass Leadership House student leaders, and a Roberts Wesleyan student vocal performance from Ruth Michel.

Following the kick-off, students will travel to 10 different community sights to participate in acts of service, learning about our city's approaches towards supporting our community and advancing equity.

Also welcome at the media-approved community site: St. Marks and St. John's Episcopal Church, 1245 Culver Road, Rochester, NY, 14609, contact: Maria Hartz | (cell) 859-314-6831. Students will be installing the irrigation system and preparing an indoor seed starting room to begin to grow produce for the church's community garden. Media note: Park on Culver Rd. in front of church and come up the office entrance sidewalk through the church garden. Entrance to the left if you are facing big red doors of church.

The other community Sites include: 19th Ward Community Association, Agape Haven of Abundance, Cameron Community Ministries, House of Mercy, Harbor House of Rochester, Legacy at Parklands, Open Door Mission, Rochester Hope, and Vineyard Farm.

This event was formerly planned by RochesterCares. Nazareth University, University of Rochester, and Roberts Wesleyan University, along with AmeriCorps programs that make up the Rochester Regional Network, are collaborating to continue this Rochester tradition. This event was made possible in part by a grant from Wegmans.
