THE PERFORMANCE

Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. Originally directed on Broadway by James Lapine. Orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick.

This Nazareth production is directed by an all-star team, including Director Hunter Foster (Tony award-nominated for his role as Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors) and his wife, choreographer Jen Cody (Rochester native & voice of Charlotte La Bouff in the Disney animated film The Princess and the Frog (2009), for which she won an Annie Award.)

The Brothers Grimm hit the stage with an epic fairytale about wishes, family and the choices we make. James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone's favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece... and a rare modern classic. The story follows a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

Director's note from Hunter Foster:
"I was a college senior when I first got to perform in Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods, playing the role of Jack and singing the iconic song, "Giants In the Sky"; it instantly became one of my favorite musicals. This mash up of classic fairy tales with its dark and complicated themes of parenting, adolescence and what happens after "Happily Ever After" has always been a rich piece of theatre. I've directed it three times, and I'm always finding something new in its complex web of storylines and its relevance to the times we live in. Even when I saw the original cast on Broadway in 1989, one couldn't help see the parallels of a Giant ravaging the world and the AIDS crisis. Into The Woods' greatest theme has always been how we as a community need each other in times of great strife. One of show's most famous songs, "No One Is Alone", as sung by Cinderella in Act 2, tells us this with its beautiful and haunting melody - its relevance ever more evident as we emerge from a time of isolation and quarantine. And once the scourge is defeated, how do we pick up the pieces and move forward? How do we teach our children to make the world better; to learn from our mistakes so the flood, the virus and the giant never returns? Into The Woods is about mothers and princesses; witches and wolves; fathers and sons; but in the end, it's about how we tell our stories in that hope that tomorrow will be a better day."
