March into spring with music, dance, theatre at the Nazareth College Arts Center this month

CW's Masters of Illusion star Jason Bishop on March 2, Rosie Revere, Engineer & Friends sensory-friendly performance on March 16, and more

Rochester, NY (02/26/2019) — From a performance by one of today's most popular magicians to the return of our sensory-friendly programming for family audiences, there is something for everyone at the Nazareth College Arts Center this month!

One of the most popular touring acts today, magician/illusionist Jason Bishop returns to Callahan Theater on Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. Star of two Off-Broadway shows developed at the New Victory Theater on N.Y.C.'s famed 42nd Street, Jason Bishop has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NBC's Today Show, and the CW Network's Masters of Illusion.

In his show "Straight Up Magic," Bishop infuses old school tricks with new school stagecraft in a virtuosic performance of skill. The company includes Bishop, his assistant Kim, and canine companion Gizmo. From stunning sleight-of-hand and close-up magic to dazzling, full-stage illusions, Bishop will perform more than a dozen acts in 90 minutes. Suggested for ages 6+. Tickets: $35-$50.

Two weeks later, another family-friendly performance is onstage with Rosie Revere, Engineer & Friends on Saturday, March 16 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Callahan Theater. Ms. Greer's classroom includes three inquisitive out-of-the-box thinkers. Rosie Revere has big dreams, Iggy Peck has a relentless passion for architecture, and Ada Twist's curiosity can drive her teacher crazy! Based on three books by New York Times best-selling author Andrea Beaty, Rosie Revere, Engineer & Friends is a fun new musical that encourages curiosity and sparks imagination! The 4 p.m. performance is sensory-friendly, designed to create a performing arts experience that is welcoming to all families with children with autism or other sensory sensitivities. The Arts Center works with the touring artist to create a sensory-friendly environment. We also welcome students from the Schools of Education and Health and Human Services to assist our ushers in accommodating the needs of our patrons.

"This is a way that we make the art we present possible for every person," said Operations Manager Lindsay Chasse. "Some of the adjustments we might make to the performance include bringing down the volume level, leaving the house lights at half so it's not dark, offering audience members fidget toys and a separate room with activities. We also offer audience members a free social story to review before they come to the show which helps them know what to expect."

March 29-30, the Nazareth College Theatre and Dance Department will present the spring dance concert Woven in Callahan Theater. Established and emerging artists will come together for two nights of extraordinary dance representing diverse styles. The concert will feature new work, repertory, and collaborations from students, faculty, and guest artists under the artistic direction of Heather Roffe, associate professor of dance in theatre and dance. Tickets: $8-$10.
