02/01/2017 (02/01/2017) — Jesuit priest, author, speaker, and world-renowned expert in gang intervention, Gregory J. Boyle will host the third installment of the 2016-17 Shannon Lecture series on March 2, at 7 p.m., in Callahan Theater in the Arts Center; and March 3 at 1:30 p.m. in Linehan Chapel in the Golisano Academic Center. Thursday night (3/2), Boyle will be presenting Save the World...or Savor It? Being Reached by the Widow, Orphan, and Stranger. On Friday afternoon (3/3), he will discuss Tattoos on the Heart: A Conversation with Fr. Gregory Boyle, S.J.. Both lectures are free and open to the public. Nazareth College is located at 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, N.Y., 14618. For more information contact Christine Bochen at cbochen4@naz.edu.

Boyle is the founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, Calif. From 1986 to 1992, Fr. Boyle served as pastor of Dolores Mission Church, then the poorest Catholic parish in the city, located between two large public housing projects and the territories of numerous gangs. There, he and parish and community members started what would eventually become Homeboy Industries, now the largest, most successful gang intervention, rehabilitation, and reentry program in the world. Homeboy trains and employs former gang members in a range of social enterprises, as well as provides critical services to more than 10,000 people who walk through its doors every year seeking a better life.

The Shannon Lecture Series honors William H. Shannon, former professor of religious at Nazareth College. Father Shannon advanced the educational mission of Nazareth College and contributed significantly to Catholic intellectual life, both nationally and internationally.
