Nazareth Student Alyssa Henry Named 2017 Newman Civic Fellow

Nazareth student Alyssa Henry of Johnstown, is among 273 students honored as a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow representing Campus Compact member institutions from 396 states, Washington, DC, and Mexico. Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education.

"Alyssa approaches social inequalities using a unique youth centered approach and is dedicated to creating positive change while empowering others to do so," says Nazareth President Daan Braveman who nominated her for the award, "She embodies all that the Newman Civic Fellowship stands for, 'a demonstrated commitment to finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.'"

Henry, an occupational therapy | community youth development double major at Nazareth, has been a proactive member of the community through her participation in a number of different community service programs. Some of her work includes participating in Global Youth Service Day, helping to create dialog about opportunities beyond high school with students from East High School, Service Learning with SUTS to work with youth from recreation centers across Rochester, the Ganondagan Corn Project which was partnered with the Ganondagan Native American Reservation to learn about their culture and perspectives while processing a native species of corn for sale, and the Clinton Global Initiative University in 2016, a nationwide conference where college students receive mentoring, attend presentations, and develop projects that create a positive community impact.

As a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow, Henry will be a part of the first cohort to benefit from a completely re-designed fellowship. The Newman Civic Fellowship, named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, is a one-year experience experience emphasizing personal, professional, and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with access to exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.
