ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

Tucked away in an old Parisian passage built in the mid-19th century is a secret antique shop. It is Christmas Eve and an older gentleman from Havana visits the shop, looking for a magical gift that will put a smile on the lips of his sick grandchild. When midnight strikes, all the objects in the store come alive-music box, puppets, dolls, stuffed animals, toy soldiers, and dancers-to help the man save the child.

Of the play, Carrasco says, "Gardenias is a beautiful and musical love letter to Paris, and links the events of last November with what happened 70 years ago when the 'wolves' entered the city of lights. The memory of a six-year-old Jewish boy hiding in an antique shop will help Senor Alejandro in his quest to save his grandchild. Fantasy, dreams, and fabulous toys will provide a magical escape from reality."

Carrasco's playwriting/directing credits extend back to 1968. His recent plays include Rochester Fringe Festival favorite, Chocolate Casi Amargo, and Fuji, and les Fantomes de los Suenos Perdidos (2015); Enamorados (2014); Diabolo (2013); Casablanca (2012); Barcarolle (2011); Abracadabra (2010); Azur (2008); and Peau D'Ane (2007). A native speaker of French and Spanish, Carrasco received a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Contemporary French Theater with a minor in Contemporary Latin American Literature. He has taught French and literature for more than 30 years.
