Jessica Tripi of Getzville in Nazareth College Department of Music's OPERA SCENES, featuring excerpts from 13 famed operas

2015 Jan 20

The Nazareth College Department of Music's Opera Workshop is pleased to present Opera Scenes at 7:30 p.m. Friday, January 23 and Saturday, January 24, 2015, in the Callahan Theater at Nazareth College Arts Center. This year, students involved will present an ambitious program of scenes from 13 different operas. This event is free and open to the public.

The Opera Scenes cast and crew consists of Nazareth College students, including Jessica Tripi, of Getzville. Many of the students will perform multiple roles.

Under the stage direction of Katie Hannigan Tabon, visiting assistant professor in the Nazareth College Department of Music, and music direction of Music lecturer Linda Boianova, Opera Scenes will consist of excerpts from Le Nozze di Figaro, Cendrillon, The Old Maid and the Thief, The Ballad of Baby Doe, Merry Wives of Windsor, The Rape of Lucretia, Cosi fan Tutte, Falstaff, Street Scene, Il Tabarro, The Aspern Papers, The Mikado, and The Secret Garden.

"It's been a joy working with the students on a vast array of styles," Tabon said. "The students have learned a lot about language, performance practice, and stagecraft. Our motto this year has been 'Ask more of yourself,' and the students have risen to the challenge."

The Nazareth College Opera Workshop is a program devoted to the performance of opera, operetta, and music theatre. Cast members are chosen by audition and present a fully staged performance. In November 2005, the workshop presented the New York State premiere of Felice by Benton Hess. Other productions have included Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, Gilbert & Sullivan's Trial by Jury, Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Cavalli's La Calisto, and Sunday Excursion by Rochester's own Alec Wilder.
