The Nazareth College Theatre and Dance Department and Theatre League are pleased to present The Beaux' Stratagem, in the delightful style of Comedy of Manners. The show will run October 16, 17, 23, and 24 at 8 p.m.; and October 18 and 25 at 2 p.m., in the Callahan Theater at the Nazareth College Arts Center. This romantic comedy complete with 18th century costumes and swordplay will provide Rochester theatergoers with a rare treat.

The cast of The Beaux' Stratagem consists of Nazareth College students, including Jacqueline Collins of Macedon.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

Jack Archer and his friend Tom Aimwell, having "sewn too many wild oats," in London have escaped with their last few pounds to the country town of Lichfield where they hope to find rich brides to enable them to continue to enjoy their youth. They feel certain that they will have more luck in disguise, but they quickly find themselves embroiled with less savory tricksters: highway men and thieves. And, of course both Jack and Tom fall in love complicating their lives that much more. As the story unfolds, the two youths must find a way to win their true loves, protect their sweethearts from theft or worse, all the while maintaining their false identities. All ends happily but not before we meet a sexy maid, a deceptive preacher, a drunken sot, and a well-meaning medical quack.

The play has been entertaining audiences since it was first produced in 1707, but the Wilder/Ludwig adaptation has recrafted it for the 21st century and audiences will be reminded of films like Tom Jones and The Princess Bride.

CAST AND CREW

Nazareth students studying in the Theatre and Dance Department fill the cast and crew. Emily Stork, (First Niagara Rochester Fringe Festival lighting designer) a recent addition to the department faculty from Julliard, will design lights and sound; Silas Holtz, (Sterling Renaissance Festival jouster) will choreograph the sword fights; and Vicki Cassarett (most recently seen at Blackfriars and JCC Centerstage) is the production's dialect expert. Other faculty includes Lindsay Reading Korth as director, Allen Shannon as scenic designer, and Yuanting Zhao as costume designer.

Jack Archer is performed by Matt Combs most recently seen at the JCC Centerstage in American Idiot.
