Rochester, NY (03/31/2017) — Nazareth College will host a two-part final installment of the 2016-17 Shannon Lecture Series on April 6 and 7 with renowned fresh water ethics expert Christiana Peppard. She will present Contemplation and Ecological Action: Tenderness and Justice in Laudato Si' on April 6 at 7 p.m. in the Forum of the Shults Center. She will then present Fresh Water Is a Human Right on April 7 at 1:30 p.m. in Linehan Chapel in the Golisano Academic Center. Both events are free and open to the public. Nazareth College is located at 4245 East Avenue, Rochester, New York 14618.

Peppard is an expert on the ethics of fresh water and problems of climate change, social justice, and sustainability. She is an assistant professor of theology, science, and ethics at Fordham University. Her research engages religious environmental ethics at the intersection of Catholic social teaching, ecological anthropology, natural law theory, and the scientific fields of hydrology and geology.

Peppard is the author of Just Water: Theology, Ethics, and the Global Water Crisis (2014), which analyzes global fresh water scarcities and mobilizes resources from Catholic social teaching toward a constructive project of water ethics. She is co-editor of Just Sustainability: Ecology, Technology, and Resource Extraction (2015), a volume that draws together nearly 30 contributors from approximately 20 countries and six continents in order to generate truly global, yet representatively local, perspectives on the structures and theological/ethical relations that contribute to environmental change in the present day. In 2013, she received the Catherine Mowry LaCugna Award from the Catholic Theological Society of America. As both public intellectual and public/social media educator, she stimulates discussion of environmental issues in venues such as TED-Ed, The New Republic, Public Radio International, The Washington Post, MSNBC, and CNN.com.

The Shannon Lecture Series honors William H. Shannon, former professor of religious at Nazareth College. Father Shannon advanced the educational mission of Nazareth College and contributed significantly to Catholic intellectual life, both nationally and internationally.
